The Lake Wylie Rotary Club Foundation has announced that it will award the first “Spirit of Service” Scholarship Award to recognize a high school senior living in the Clover school district who has demonstrated a heart for community service. The top award in this first year is $2,000. Adults can nominate graduating seniors who live in the Clover school district, regardless of whether they attend Clover High, a private school or are home schooled.

The scholarship will be awarded to a student who has exemplified exceptional commitment to community service through hours of volunteering and dedication to their chosen service organization/purpose.

Students should be nominated by an adult (not a peer or family member) who can attest to this student’s heart for service and dedication to their chosen outreach. Once all nominations are received, the top 5 applicants will be invited to present a short (5-7 minute) information session to the Rotary club about their volunteer work and why they chose to commit their time and talents to these efforts. A selection committee will then make their choice from these finalists.

You can download a nomination form below or obtain one in the church office at Good Samaritan United Methodist Church in Lake Wylie or the guidance department at Clover High School.

Applications must be received by April 20, 2012. They can be dropped off at the church office or mailed to:

Luis Espinosa, a Rotarian and the Branch Manager for the Lake Wylie BB&T, led the club’s poinsettia sales efforts. “As usual, our members pulled together and did an amazing job for a great cause.

The Rotary Club of Lake Wylie has now funded seven micro-loans through Kiva.org. Kiva’s mission is to connect people, through lending, for the sake of alleviating poverty.

The clubs latest loan was awarded to Ziporah Njeri who is a hardworking mother of three in Narok, Kenya who has been practicing mixed farming for over 5 years. She plans to use part of the loan amount to buy farm inputs such as maize seeds and fertilizers and use the remainder to add more stock in her grocery business. She intends to use the additional income from the proceeds of this loan to buy cattle for fattening and to pay her children’s school fees. She hopes to develop her business and to be financially stable in the future.

Prior to that, the club helped fund a loan to Zeporah Geronimo, a mother of six in the Philippines. Zeporah is a chicken farmer who will use the loan proceeds to buy feeds and medicines for her chickens. She is working tirelessly toward the attainment of her dream: to save enough money so she can afford to send her children to college.

Kiva empowers individuals to lend to an entrepreneur across the globe. By combining micro-finance with the internet, Kiva is creating a global community of people connected through lending.

Kiva was born of the following beliefs:

* People are by nature generous, and will help others if given the opportunity to do so in a transparent, accountable way.
* The poor are highly motivated and can be very successful when given an opportunity.
* By connecting people we can create relationships beyond financial transactions, and build a global community expressing support and encouragement of one another.

Kiva promotes:

* Dignity: Kiva encourages partnership relationships as opposed to benefactor relationships. Partnership relationships are characterized by mutual dignity and respect.
* Accountability: Loans encourage more accountability than donations where repayment is not expected.
* Transparency: The Kiva website is an open platform where communication can flow freely around the world

Past recipients of the clubs loans includes:

Sodji from Agoe, Togo who used the proceeds to start a motorcycle taxi service.

A group of livestock farmers from a village in Senegal. The loan helped them buy sheep for fattening.

Gladys Angelica Zelaya who owns a bakery in El Salvador. She is using the money to enable her buy baking supplies wholesale so that she may provide her children with a better future

Ruth Sungu is using the money to my maize to add to her stock. The profits she makes will be used to pay the school fees for her children

A group of farmers from the village of Vihear in Cambodia to buy fertilizer and other supplies to cultivate rice.

One of the many programs that the Lake Wylie Rotary Club Supports is the Clover School Districts Backpack Program. The Backpack program serves nutritious, supplemental food items, and essentials such as toothbrushes, and toothpaste in pre-made bags to 182 elementary and middle school students. The backpack program helps to provide food to students throughout the year that may go hungry over the weekends and holidays if it were not for the backpacks provided.

The Lake Wylie Rotary Club recently sponsored the Thanksgiving turkeys for the backpack program where they supplied the holiday bird for more than 30 of the districts neediest students.

You can find the lastest updates on the backpack program on the Clover School Districts Announcements website.
